2008 cadillac cts review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new and more upscale than before. introductionthe cadillac cts is virtually all-new for 2008. Cadillac has moved the style, performance and in-car electronics way upmarket from the original cts in an effort to be more competitive with the best of the imports, namely the bmw 530i, mercedes-benz c-class, lexus gs, infiniti g35, and audi a4. the 2008 cadillac cts boasts major changes to the engines and chassis that upgrade performance. The cts comes with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. the front and rear tires are a full two inches farther apart in track width for 2008, so the general body shape is wider, and a great deal more aggressive looking, with exaggerated front and rear wheel flares. in addition to the traditional 3. 6-liter v6, there's a whole new 3. 6-liter, 24-valve v6 engine with direct fuel injection that makes 15 percent more power. It looks like it's hungry for red meat. Its new levels of grip, handling and steering were modeled after the bmw 530i sedan, and it was developed by the cadillac engineers on bmw's home ground, the 14-mile, 73-turn nurburgring circuit in germany. lineupthe new 2008 cadillac cts 32,245) comes standard with a 263-horsepower v6. A 304-hp v6 1,000) is optional. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard; a six-speed automatic 1,300) is optional. The cts is rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel-drive 1,900) is optional. every cts comes with a basic package of 32 luxury, comfort, convenience and safety items including all the normal power assists, xm satellite radio, onstar with turn-by-turn navigation, and a bose eight-speaker sound system with cd, mp3 and auxiliary capability. options are many. A performance tire package is available with p235/50zr18 performance tires and alloy wheels, upgraded abs, and the fe3 performance suspension 1,240). safety features that come standard on all models include front, side and curtain airbags, abs, traction control, and stabiltrak electronic stability control. All-wheel drive improves safety further. walkaroundcadillac has completely redesigned the cts front end for 2008, with a much larger eggcrate grille that fits with the cadillac family look of the dts, sts, and escalade. The new grille provides more incoming air for the engine cooling, brake cooling and transmission cooling functions. The large lighting units at the front and rear make very good use of light-emitting-diode or led technology, lots of light and lots of style for little electrical load. likewise, the taillights, rear quarter panels and decklid have been redone, and the rear bumper has been rejiggered to feature exposed dual exhaust tips. Altogether, this is a much, much better looking car than the previous cts, with more adventurous lines everywhere, especially in the gracefully sloping rear roof section, which isn't as harshly angular as on the previous edition. interiorthe crazy-quilt nature of the original cts interior, with lots of different textures but all in black, has been thrown away, and it's been replaced by a very nice new design for 2008 using black and brushed metal and chrome, very contemporary and very space efficient. We really appreciated the range of adjustment offered by the power seats and the power steering column adjustments; we've always felt that all cars should have tilt-and-telescope columns for ultimate comfort and proper driving position. Using the navigation screen, it's easy to switch back and forth between the three broadcast and three stored-music formats by simply touching the screen, and the blue display is large enough to be read from the back seat. We think it's one of the best overall, most fun to use sound systems we've ever used in a car. driving impressionthe 2008 cadillac cts is a responsive sports sedan with excellent handling and high-speed stability yet it's smooth and quiet when cruising. the more powerful of the two available engines is a new direct-injection v6 that produces 304 horsepower. It's extremely responsive. The difference in performance feel and sound from this engine compared with the standard 263-hp v6 is amazing. It's very solidly put together, and in all other modes besides wide-open-throttle, it's quiet inside, even with 17-inch high-performance tires. summarythe new 2008 cadillac cts looks great and is relatively roomy inside. It's got lots of poke for the performance enthusiast with the bigger engine and available all-wheel drive. For those who don't need or want the extra stuff, there's lots of style with the standard v6 and rear-wheel drive. The next-generation cadillac cts is a small sedan that promises more horsepower, optional all-wheel-drive, an impressively finished benchmark interior and one large dose of style. While the 2008 cts shares the current cars 113. 4 inch wheelbase, most of its other dimensions are slightly larger. It comes standard with 17-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, with 18-inch wheels available as an option. Feature highlights include a standard bose audio system with eight speakers and both usb and auxiliary mp3-player jacks. An optional direct-injection version of the 3. 6-liter v6, with 304 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque is also available. Transmission choices include a new six-speed automatic or six-speed manual, and a variable-torque full-time all-wheel-drive system will be offered on the cts for the first time. For 2008, the cadillac cts is redesigned with larger exterior dimensions, another engine option, and more standard features. New look, new power, new features. introductionfor 2008, cadillac sts gets more horsepower, more electronic features, and bolder styling inside and out. the sts has been given a substantial facelift for 2008. It's the most significant change in appearance since the sts was introduced as an all-new model for 2005. for 2008, a new v6 engine comes standard, a 3. 6-liter direct-injection v6 developing 302 horsepower. The six-speed automatic transmission introduced on v8 models last year now comes with the v6 as well. Also available is one of gm's most sophisticated v8 engines, boasting the latest in computerized management and variable valve timing. The result is smooth, efficient power. State-of-the-art occupant safety comes standard as well. Rear-wheel drive provides the balance and control that serious enthusiasts demand. All-wheel drive is also available, for handling stability in inclement weather. lineupthe 2008 cadillac sts comes with a choice of v6 42,390) or v8 51,810) engines. The high-performance sts-v 76,555) comes with a supercharged v8. Special paint and the engine block heater are the only options; the sunroof can be deleted for credit. safety features that come standard on all models include dual two-stage frontal airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, and front-and-rear side curtain airbags. Tire-pressure monitors are standard on v8s and available as part of the luxury package on v6s. It's the most significant change in appearance since the sts was introduced as an all-new model for 2005. its distinctive profile hasn't changed; in fact, most of the outer skin of the sts is carried over. Its crisp lines draw an almost box-like silhouette that somehow still looks aerodynamic. Perhaps it's the gently curved a-pillar and c-pillar that tend a bit more toward art than science. It's all very consistent with cadillac's art and science design motif. up front, however, the 2008 sts has abandoned any semblance of modern, european-style subtlety in favor of a boldly traditional eggcrate grin. Cadillac says the new dual-textured, multi-faceted grille was inspired by the sixteen concept car, but to us it looks like a re-run from 1969, an impression compounded by cadillac's now-trademark vertically stacked headlamps. More subtle chrome accents have been added to the door handles and rocker flares. New 18x8-inch, 14-spoke polished aluminum wheels are available. the backside is vaguely reminiscent of the old eldorado coupe, with vertical taillights bracketing a tall, squared-off boot. Recessed in the boot's rear vertical is a trapezoidal inset, long enough for european-spec license plates, housing large backup lights at the left and right extremes. The two 2008 models are almost indistinguishable to the casual observer, even when parked side by side. Both cars present only minimally different iterations of the same sharp angles and flat planes. Both now wear the same vintage dollar grin grille. The sts and cts share platforms, but the wheelbase of the sts is three and a half inches longer than that of the cts, and its body is nearly five inches longer overall. the platinum edition features 18-inch chrome-finish wheels, an even brighter chrome-finish grille; bright chrome inserts on the exterior door handles, and special glacier gold paint. the super-performance sts-v avoids the retro look up front with polished stainless wire-mesh grilles above and below the front bumper, and a not particularly subtle power bulge in its engine hood. Its deeper front air dam incorporates brake scoops below the fog lights. Sts-v gets the new fender vents, but they seem more in line with the performance model's extroverted character. Its 10-spoke wheels are unique; its rear spoiler more obvious. Those wood accents cost extra, but we much prefer them over the standard brushed aluminum trim, which looks and feels cold and reflects sunlight to the point of annoyance. Arm rests and head restraints are a degree or two softer than the cushions and side bolsters, boosting the comfort factor a couple notches. All essential controls are within easy reach, although there could be more clearance between the lower door panels and seat bottom to access the front seat adjusters. For this reason, we were especially grateful for the seat memory feature, which often saved us from having to reach down there. The interior is noticeably roomier than that of the marginally.
